The first project of freshman year, the pier project (as it was affectionately known) was an exercise in observation and representation. After a day of survey and a week of analysis, our group's goal was to intervene in a low-impact but appreciable manner. Looking at the movement of people through space, parasite is both a response to and a representation of a walk down the north stairs of Cal Poly's building five. Cantilevered over the stair are a set of tapered arms that are offset by hung concrete counter-weights. The most development came late in the design of the clipping mechanism that holds the construction a meter over the sloped guard wall. Until the install was complete, we were 95% convinced the entire project would simply slip its way down the wall....

anychair

An exploration as a part of thesis, anychair was a study in adaptive systems and their place in furniture. A simple seat tenuously rests upon four gas cylinders keeping the whole system completely dynamic. Once weight is applied to the chair, the cylinders engage and the chair rests upon the steel columns in their place. Initially, the chair was designed to be a fashioned after the seats that so commonly make up classrooms everywhere (the wild legs acting in stark contrast).
